In 1999 the UK government introduced legislation withdrawing basic support for failed asylum seekers. The results of this initiative have been catastrophic, provoking further widespread destitution amongst those who cannot return home and remain in limbo in Wales. This exacerbates the risk of exploitation, destitution and violence.
The Welsh Refugee Council works in collaboration with British Red Cross to deliver the Hardship Clinic at our Cardiff Office. This takes place every Friday from 2pm to 4pm and includes a small payment and food supplies for those living in destitution. This service has proved to be fundamental to the most vulnerable and is currently accessed by over 35 people each week.
